GCU is a world leader in research on blood borne viruses (BBV), with award-winning collaborative working (as winners of the 2021 Emerald Publishing International Real Impact Award and the 2023 Research Project of the Year Award at The Herald Higher Education Awards). An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Professor to join our BBV research team, within the Research Centre for Health (ReaCH). ReaCH has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU’s health related research has been formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. Moreover, the impact of GCU’s applied health research was classified as ‘outstanding’ and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent THE Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing.
We are seeking to recruit an experienced Professor to provide additional leadership to our BBV research team over the next 5 years. The position will enhance our public health and epidemiological leadership to evaluate and inform efforts in key Scottish Government policy areas on Hepatitis C elimination and the National Mission to reduce drug deaths and harms. The position is offered as a 0.2 FTE post (1 day per week) for a 5-year fixed-term contract.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant subject (i.e. public health, epidemiology), be internationally recognised for their public health and epidemiological research on both hepatitis C and substance use, have a track record of effective leadership, have secured external research funding in areas of blood borne viruses and substance use, as well as supporting early career researchers to gain external funding. An established network of international research partners, involving external research funding supporting these collaborations, is essential. The applicant also needs to be highly experienced in providing expert advice to government and other organisations at a national and international level.
