The National Institute on Drug Abuse will be recruiting a Branch Chief for the Communications Branch (CB) in the Office of Science Policy and Communications (OSPC). OSPC’s mission is to lead NIDA’s strategic efforts to inform public health policy and practice by ensuring the institute is the trusted source for scientific information on drug use and addiction.
The fulfillment of NIDA’s and OSPC’s missions depends on effective interaction with a variety of national and international audiences about the Institute’s goals, policies, programs, accomplishments, and other relevant information. These audiences include scientific researchers, physicians and other healthcare providers, policy makers, the public, the media, people with lived and living experience of drug use, and voluntary and professional organizations. The Communications Branch, which is responsible for facilitating these interactions: (1) conducts NIDA's media outreach activities; (2) responds to information inquiries from the public; (3) leads NIDA’s public information activities and public education campaigns; (4) coordinates content development and review of NIDA messaging disseminated to the public; (5) assesses needs and designs communications materials for specific populations; (6) collaborates with other Federal agencies to promote dissemination and application of NIDA research; (7) leads the development, design and management of the Institute’s digital dissemination and outreach; and (8) oversees the technical management, monitoring, maintenance, and coordination of NIDA’s web, social media, and audiovisual-based operations.
The Chief for the Communications Branch reports to the OSPC Director, provides authoritative and expert advice to NIDA leadership, and makes significant contributions to the development and execution of communication and outreach strategies and activities at NIDA. The incumbent serves as the communications lead for the Institute, often working directly with the NIDA Director to support and shape communications activities.
