Parental Supply of Alcohol Cohort: A 10-year follow-up

Parental Supply of Alcohol Cohort: A 10-year follow-up

Event description

Parents are the major supplier of alcohol to adolescents. The Australian Parental Supply of Alcohol Longitudinal Study (APSALS) was established at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, UNSW, to explore whether this practice leads to more moderated drinking, or to greater alcohol consumption amongst adolescents.

APSALS has been following a large cohort of young people and their parents over the past 10 years, aiming to better understand the impacts of parental supply of alcohol and adolescent/early adult alcohol consumption and related harms.

In a series of short presentations by the research team, we will provide a background and overview of the study to date, along with discussions of some of the findings from the cohort to date, including:

  • the effect of parental supply of alcohol across adolescence on alcohol-related harms in early adulthood
  • trajectories of adolescent alcohol consumption
  • associations between the age of initiation to alcohol use and later alcohol related problems
