Abstract

In the realm of substance use prevention, it is imperative to address when, how, and why to adapt preventive interventions. This article delves into the importance of these inquiries within the context of substance use prevention, providing a comprehensive understanding of the technical foundations rooted in the implementation science.

This study undertakes a scoping review, aiming to establish the current state of scientific knowledge pertaining to the reasons, processes, scopes, and opportune moments for adapting preventive substance use interventions on a global scale. The study considers articles from indexed journals (English and Spanish), as well as gray literature.

The need for intervention adaptation arises from the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of substance use trends and societal contexts. Understanding when to adapt interventions is crucial to ensure they remain effective, relevant, and responsive to the unique challenges presented by different populations and settings.

The process of adaptation requires a systematic and evidence-based approach. This article explores the technical aspects of this process, drawing upon insights from the field of implementation science. It examines strategies and methodologies that facilitate the successful adaptation of preventive interventions, ensuring that they align with the latest research findings and adhere to best practices.

Furthermore, the rationale for adaptation is multifaceted, encompassing factors such as changes in substance use patterns, emerging risk factors, advancements in intervention strategies, and shifts in cultural norms. By elucidating the underlying reasons for adaptation, this article aims to underscore the imperative of ongoing adjustment and enhancement of preventive measures.

This scoping review takes a comprehensive approach to gather insights from a broad range of sources and may serve as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, offering a deeper understanding of the topic and contributing to the advancement of evidence-based approaches and the enhancement of preventive strategies in the field.
