Around 88,000 Americans die from alcohol-related harm each year. The physical effects of alcohol abuse, including certain cancers, heart disease and liver disease, are well-known. There is also much evidence that suggests alcohol can have a negative impact on cognition. A recent article published in the journal Research Society on Alcoholism shows that adults that drink heavily have impaired memory, learning, verbal and motor functioning capabilities and are slower at processing information. The study also found that for those with a history of alcohol dependence, their cognitive processes are affected in much the same way.
