NIH Workshop on Psychedelics as Therapeutics

NIH

Psychedelics like psilocybin have produced great interest as potential therapeutic agents for different mental disorders. Under the current circumstances that COVID-19 has posed, people perceive a mental health crisis that could benefit from a more extensive medication arsenal. This situation is more evident now but has been looming since years ago. Looking for alternatives, clinicians and patients have explored means such as compounds in hallucinogenic plants and fungi, famous for anecdotes of their capacity to ease mental disorder symptoms. In many cases, people are unaware of other components present in plants and fungi, besides psychedelics, potentially toxic. Regarding psychedelics, as also happens with the misleading term of medicinal marijuana, people may be confused and not identify that the therapeutic potential comes from specific compounds instead of the entire product (plants, fungi, etc.).

To learn what does Science can tell about the gaps, challenges, and opportunities on psychedelics as therapeutics, the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) will host a virtual and free workshop on January 12 and 13, 2022.
