For individuals who present to the emergency department (ED) with substance use-related concerns, including overdose, engaging them in linkage to care and additional follow-up activities is critical for their recovery and well-being. In the ED, team-based strategies between clinicians and recovery coaches are effective to support continuity of comprehensive care for these individuals. Hear from this South Carolina-based team on best practices for working with and integrating peers in hospital and ED settings.
Educational Objectives:
• Identify team-based strategies to engage patients in the emergency department (ED) and after discharge
• Discuss how recovery coaches and clinicians partner to support patients presenting in the ED with substance use-related concerns
• Identify strategies to reduce substance use-related stigma among clinicians and hospital staff
• Describe best practices for working with and integrating peers in hospital and ED settings
